ABOUT DR. JAY:
     A Chattanooga Native, Dr. J is a family physician with a sincere interest in community medicine with an integrative approach.
     She went to Duke for college, UNC-Chapel Hill for Medical School, and completed her residency training at the University of Michigan.
     While in college, she studied biology/premedical sciences, cultural anthropology, environmental ecosystems and classical studies. In medical school, she volunteered at the student-run free clinic, as well as being a member of the Domestic Violence Action Coalition. She was also part of ‘Family to Family Initiative’, a program designed to provide support to children of at-risk families to keep them within their own neighborhoods. During college and medical school, she received numerous grants and scholarships for success despite adversity.
     At the University of Michigan residency program, she acquired leadership skills and discovered the availability of teaching opportunities and have enjoyed learning to utilize them. She also completed a research project looking at integrative, non-diet approaches to weight loss.
     She quotes “The ability to read about a condition, research it, apply it to my clinical practice and then teach and talk about it – is truly rewarding and fascinating to me. “
     She feels she is well suited to teach others from her own personal learning. She experienced domestic violence, parental substance abuse, homelessness, and the foster care system and through these experiences, she has learned to humanize patient relationships and create ways to improve health care of all people in an integrative and sustainable way.
     Through her personal and professional experiences; she also enjoys clinical applications of disease at the nutritional, hormonal, biochemical, and preventive level. To support this interest, she will use streetchartz.com and Rep Yo City – a online platform for underground artists – as a tool to educate urban youth about medical topics which affect their communities.
     Finally, she likes to stay on top of new technology and information within her clinical practice for the purposes of updated teaching, research and interactions with other allied health professionals. In this way, she can promote her growth and development and provide her patients with the best possible care. In addition to all the above, she believes that her life experiences have taught her patience, compassion for others, and humility.
